“Tristeza” (Screenprint, 2005)

I spent a semester in college studying screenprinting, and to say it wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve done in my life is a grand understatement. Even with an eye for design precision, I found screenprinting fairly difficult (as you can see I never got it perfect). But it was a welcome challenge, and it helped me to understand the complexity of this very physical art. Here’s an assignment I did modeled after early American poster art (circa 1970), using the same theme and colors found in work by lithographer David Edward.

After the semester I decided I’d probably never screenprint again, but that’s okay. Certain things in life should be left to professionals. And that’s my shiny golden nugget of wisdom for this rainy Tuesday.
